Overview
Who belongs in this list, why it is not the same as your team, and what an employee record is used for.
An employee is somebody who does the work: you, your staff, a subcontractor you pitch as part of your team.
This is not the same as your team
Two different lists, and confusing them is the usual first mistake.
- Employees are people you describe: their role, their rates, their CV. They may have no Steerd login at all.
- Team members are people who can sign in. They cost a seat.
A subcontractor you pitch to clients but who never signs in to Steerd is an employee and not a team member. Somebody who logs their hours is both, which is what linking an account is for.
What an employee record is used for
- CVs, which belong to an employee and are what you send to a client.
- Project assignments, who is on what, at what rate.
- Time tracking, whose hours these are.
Active and inactive
An employee is Active or Inactive. Inactive is for people who have left or are between engagements.
Inactive keeps the history. Their tracked hours, their assignments and the invoices those produced are all still true and still attached to them. Deleting the person would be the way to make that history hard to read, which is why inactive exists.
