Syncing contacts to your phone
Creating a sync password, setting it up on iPhone and Android, and the deletion behavior that surprises people.
Add your Steerd contacts to your phone. They stay up to date automatically.
It works over CardDAV, which iPhone and Android both speak natively. No app to install.
Create a sync password
Create sync password, then name the device:
Name the device you are setting up, so you can tell your passwords apart later and revoke just one of them.
Give it a real name. "iPhone" is fine, "password2" is how you end up revoking the wrong one in a year.
The password is shown once. "This is the only time you will see this password. Copy it now, you will not be able to see it again." Set the device up while it is on screen.
You get three values: server, username and password. All three go into your phone.
On iPhone
Settings, then Apps, then Contacts, then Accounts, Add Account, Other, Add CardDAV Account. Enter the server, username and password.
Your Steerd contacts appear as their own account, alongside iCloud rather than mixed into it.
On Android
Android has no built-in CardDAV client. Install one from the Play Store (DAVx5 is the usual choice), then give it the same three values.
It goes both ways
Edit a contact on your phone and the change reaches Steerd. Add one on your phone and it appears here.
And the one that surprises people: deleting a contact on your phone archives it in Steerd rather than deleting it. Their links to projects and invoices survive. See The contact archive.
Revoking
Revoke a sync password and that device stops syncing immediately. Other devices are unaffected, which is the entire reason each device gets its own password.
Revoke when a phone is lost, sold, or belonged to somebody who has left.
