Creating an invoice
The three ways to start an invoice, and what Steerd fills in for you before you type anything.
Start from unbilled time
The path most people want. On the Time screens Steerd shows a Ready to invoice summary per client: the hours that are billable, priced, and not yet on any invoice. Choose Draft invoice and you get a draft addressed to that client.
Two things it tells you there, both worth reading before you click:
- "no rates set" means the hours exist but have no price, so they cannot be invoiced yet.
- "2 entries have no client yet" means time that is not attributed to anything billable. Assign it first or it will not appear.
Start from the Invoices screen
Invoices, then New. You choose the client yourself, and the draft opens empty. Use this for anything that is not time based: a fixed fee, a license, an expense you are passing on.
Start from a correction
Correcting an issued invoice also produces a draft, prefilled from the original. Correcting a finalized invoice covers that case, which behaves differently enough to deserve its own page.
What Steerd decides for you
The moment a draft has a client, Steerd derives the tax treatment from your invoicing profile and that client's country and VAT ID. You can override it, but the derived answer is right far more often than not, and overriding it is a tax decision rather than a formatting one. See Tax, VAT and reverse charge.
It does not assign a number yet. Drafts have no number; the number is assigned when you issue.
Before you go further
The invoice will carry your company details exactly as they stand in Settings, Invoicing at the moment you issue it. If that profile is incomplete, the checklist will block you at the end. Filling it in first is much less annoying than discovering it at the end.
